Organized Collection of Articles From Maggie May

Today we have a guest blogger, Maggie May.

Here is her introduction:

Hi! My name is Maggie May and I've been teaching AP Psychology and Honors Psychology at Villa Joseph Marie High School in Holland, PA for four years. I have my Bachelor's degree in History with a 7-12 Social Studies Teaching Certificate from West Chester University and recently graduated from La Salle University with my Master's degree in Education. I am excited for the 2017-2018 school year which will mark my fifth year teaching psychology. I am especially "psyched" to be adding an "Introduction to Psychology" elective course to my schedule. In addition to psych I am a lover of all things history -- so far I've taught American History, American Government, and Principles of Sociology. I hope you find this compilation of psychology articles/video links/Ted talks to be helpful as we all plan to head back to school!

Link to her Google Doc that compiled the set of articles posted in the AP Psych Facebook Group over the past year. This is an incredible resource for those who like to go beyond the textbook for making connections to the "real world."

Thank you, Maggie!!!

AP Psychology Exam - equated across years!

I learned something interesting (to me) about the AP psychology exam via Twitter: the exam is "equated" across years, meaning that the difficulty of the exam is kept constant. This means that if students do "better" on one year vs. another, we can interpret that improvement as a learning gain.

Teachers of Interest: Michael Corayer

I'm not sure when I "met" him online or how I got to know him, by I have been very impressed by the knowledge and writing of Michael Corayer. I've had a chance to read his books on mastering introductory psychology, available at the links below. His writing style is engaging and the stories he uses to bring the reader in are fascinating. I highly recommend checking out his blogs, his books, and his twitter account. Below is a short biography.

Michael is still working on the book series, the process of researching, writing, and editing has been taking much longer than expected but says it has been worth it just for the knowledge he has gained. He is working on the last few chapters of volume 4 now, so a full print edition should be available by the end of this school year. His goal is to have the book start helping teachers and students next fall. In the meantime, the first 3 volumes are currently available as ebooks through Amazon and other stores. (Here are the Amazon links for Volume 1Volume 2Volume 3).

Michael Corayer is originally from Brockton, Massachusetts. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Harvard in 2006. In 2008, he moved to Shanghai, China, and began teaching IB Psychology at Shanghai High School International Division. Thanks to growing student interest in psychology over the next few years, he was able to expand the courses offered to include multiple sections of AP Psychology as well as elective courses in psychology. His students were engaged and hard-working and he is proud that last year they earned a 100% pass rate on both IB and AP exams, with the majority of AP students earning a 5. Thanks to encouragement and feedback from his students, he began working to turn his lecture notes into a book series designed to help other psychology students master the material. He left China in July of 2015 and is currently living in Austin, Texas.

Guest Post: QuizUp

Today's Guest Post is by Michael Sandler or Arlington High School in the great state of Massachusetts. Michael recently posted during #psychat his exploration of using the app "QuizUp" for AP Psychology studying.

Here is his idea, in his own words. Thanks, Michael, for contributing!

If your students are like mine, they’re on their phones whenever they can – and sometimes should – be. I’ll admit it: the same applies to me. When I have a moment, I like to play games, especially against friends; so do many of my students.

QuizUp is an app I’ve been playing for a few years. It allows players to face off in head-to-head trivia matches about a wide variety of topics. Recently, the game’s producer (Plain Vanilla Games, from Iceland, of all places) unveiled the opportunity for users to create original quiz categories. There has been a Psychology category for years – the questions tend to center around clinical psych – but I wanted to make a study tool tailored to my classes’ curriculum.

After my students read the chapter we’re studying, they have to create original multiple-choice questions about the unit. They use this Google form which populates a spreadsheet. From there, it’s copy-and-paste to put the questions into whatever quizzing tool I prefer: Socrative, Kahoot, Quizziz, and now QuizUp. The metacognitive act of creating questions is an ideal study method.

I encourage you to send your students to QuizUp’s web site or app and search for “AP Psychology.” My students use Myers for AP, ed. 1 and they wrote all of the questions. (But I vetted them, so no junk!) There are presently questions for Chapters 1-3, 5-8, and 10, but I will be adding more as the year progresses. I’d love to see some unfamiliar names on the leaderboard!

Psychology Memes

Memes:
--an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.

  • a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.

I posted about an app that makes memes back in 2014 at this link: http://teachinghighschoolpsychology.blogspot.com/2014/05/meme-factory-post.html

Since then, I have found more than a few psychology memes online. Some are accurate, some are not. You can use accurate ones for lesson starters or inaccurate ones as a way to check for understanding. You could have students create their own. So many possibilities.

Here are some fun ones.  Enjoy!
