Concussions and Damage to Young Brains

Embedded below is a video from ESPN's E:60 show about a popular high school athlete who experienced a second concussion before the first one was healed. The damage to his brain and body are expertly shown, including a photo of when he had to have part of his skull removed in order to help deal with the swelling of his damaged brain. If you have not seen it, it is quite powerful as it shows both before, the event, and his recovery and rehabilitation afterward.

As a teacher who strives to be relevant, I am always interested in finding material that students can connect with their own life now. The day that this article and video were posted, several of my senior students had mentioned how they have injuries but play through them, regardless of consequences. I saw the opportunity to discuss their thought processes and to stress the importance of being aware of the signs of concussion. This video grabbed all 25 students' attention and the discussion that followed was substantive and productive. I do believe there were students who saw past their myopic feelings and considered how important it was to take concussions seriously. Thanks for posting this!
