Ten years of the APA-Clark workshop

The 2009 t-shirt, honoring the anniversary of Freud's 1909 visit to Clark
This week marks the 10th anniversary of the APA-Clark workshop for high school psychology teachers. It's hard to believe that it was five years ago when I wrote this post about attending the workshop. I was also very fortunate enough in 2011 to be one of the high school teachers presenters for this workshop, along with Kristin Whitlock, and I posted about it here. Whether as a participant or a leader, this workshop has been a phenomenal experience for me, and I believe that it was a terrific experience for more than 200 high school teachers since 2005.

Dr. Gurel in 2009
As I have written previously, this workshop is due to a partnership between the APA and TOPSS (especially Emily Leary Chesnes), Clark University (especially Nancy Budwig), and of course Dr. Lee Gurel. Dr. Gurel has generously given money each year to fund this workshop (along with many other TOPSS projects) and even participates himself by attending the workshop each year. I know many participants who are enchanted by that "sweet old guy" in the front row, who they learned much later was the benefactor making it all possible.

If you have been a participant in this workshop, feel free to leave a comment below about what the experience meant to you. I know that Dr. Gurel is a frequent reader of our blog, and I am sure he would appreciate hearing how his gifts have impacted you.

I attended the workshop in 2010 when Charlie Blair-Broeker and Mike Hamilton were co-teachers. It was enriching for all the participants! I was also able to meet Emily Leary Chesnes (of the APA Education Directorate/TOPSS) and Dr. Lee Gurel for the first time.

Thank you Dr. Gurel, Clark, and APA for creating an atmosphere where teachers can network and grow academically. It is Dr. Gurel's passion to assist secondary teachers (many of whom feel largely unprepared to teach the science of psychology). Dr. Gurel personally encouraged me
and I am grateful for his support.

It is affirming to see Clark in its 10th year. The number of high schools offering psychology continues to grow and what better place can teachers learn about some of psychology's greatest achievements?

Thank you Dr. Gurel for investing your time and energy into secondary teachers of psychology. You have a genuine concern for EACH and every one of us and it is greatly appreciated! Thank you for 10 years of Clark and to many more!!!

THANK YOU DR. LEE GUREL!!!!

Dr. Gurel is a fabulous champion of high school psychology! His generosity is unmatched, and I am so grateful to have worked with him over the years. He has given all of us such a tremendous gift!

The APA/Clark Workshop is a phenomenal experience. To be at Clark in the midst of all of their history being on the forefront of psychological science is truly amazing. The presenters are top-notch, and the participants catch the fire of giving psychology away.

Thanks to Dr. Gurel and all of the folks who make this workshop happen each year!

I was fortunate enough to attend the APA/Clark Workshop last year and I cannot say enough about what a wonderful learning experience it was! Laura Brandt and Pete Masciopinto presented such useful teaching resources!

Networking is so so so very important for psychology teachers, especially those of us in small towns and small schools. I was able to meet a variety of people, share ideas and resources and collaborate later via twitter.

Thank you to Dr. Gurel for your generosity and devotion to high school psychology teachers, and to the APA for recognizing the role that high school teachers play in early introduction to the discipline.

If you are reading this blog post and wonder "should I apply?" The answer is "YES! What are you waiting for?"

I am currently at Clark University for this amazing experience. The people I have met are passionate about psychology and the presenters have been engaging and enthusiastic.

Last night at dinner we celebrated the 10 years of the partnership between Clark University and APA. Thank you to Dr. Gurel for continuing to believe in high school teachers!!

Looking forward to two more amazing days with Nancy Fenton and Randy Ernst!!

I was fortunate enough to attend the workshop twice, in 2007 and 2009. It was so empowering to be among psychology teachers from all over the country, working towards a common goal. Up to that point I had taught psychology for ten years but without any other psychology teachers in my school to collaborate with. These workshops, along with all the TOPSS resources, were a gold mine!!

Thank you Dr. Gurel, along with Emily and Nancy, for making it all possible!!

Deb Park and I got to the the teacher-leaders at the 1st Clark conference, and we all owe Dr. Gurel a debt. The Clark workshop is a fabulous, unique experience for high school teachers. Dr. Gurel's cheerful championing of the importance of high school psychology honors us as professionals, and I am grateful for his generosity.

I was able to attend the conference in 2011 and it was amazing. So many great resources and presenters, plus being able to talk with a lot of great teachers is an amazing perk. I look forward to going back soon, it is such a great experience!
