Professional Development Options for High School Psychology Teachers Part 2

One of the best experiences for professional development is the APA/Clark Workshop. Ask any of the hundreds of "graduates" from the workshop and they will tell you it was one of the most professionally rewarding experiences they have had.

This year, Amy Ramponi and Brad Wray will be the primary Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools TOPSS presenters. Below is the photo from 2018.

I encourage anyone who is the sole psychology teacher in their school to apply. This is especially true if you are from a traditionally underrepresented community. One of the goals for the APA in general, and TOPSS more specifically is to bring in more people to increase ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, age, geographic, disability/ability, sexual orientation, and belief system diversity.

Dear Colleague,

I hope this message finds you well. The TOPSS Committee is meeting in Washington, DC, this weekend (April 1–3) to discuss multiple agenda items and consider how APA and TOPSS can best support you and all high school psychology teachers. I will share a summary of our meeting with you later this spring. In the meantime, you may want to read the 2015 TOPSS Annual Report to see what the committee discussed and achieved last year. Highlights include continued support of regional networks for teachers, recognition of teachers and students and a membership satisfaction survey.

There is much to look forward to this spring and summer. Please watch for the TOPSS spring mailing, which includes academic achievement certificates for you to award your outstanding students. As we look ahead to the summer, we hope you can take part in at least one of the following:
  • APA/Clark University Workshop (April 15 deadline) – This three-day workshop is an outstanding professional development and networking opportunity for high school psychology teachers, featuring a variety of sessions on psychology content and activities for the classroom. Travel stipends and scholarships are available!
  • APA Convention and a Pre-Convention Workshop for Introductory Psychology Teachers (July 1 deadline) – The APA convention will take place in Denver, CO, August 4–7. TOPSS will sponsor three invited addresses, and the Education Directorate is sponsoring a full-day workshop on August 3 on hard-to-teach topics and ethics and teaching. Funding is available to attend the convention! You can apply for up to $500 to support travel, hotel and registration costs through the APF Professional Development Awards (April 25 deadline).
  • If you teach Advanced Placement (AP) psychology and will be at the AP Reading in June, TOPSS will host a get-together at the reading on June 10 for those interested in finding out more about TOPSS. This will be a good time to meet other TOPSS members and play a game of hi/low facilitated by members of the TOPSS Committee.
The TOPSS website always has the latest news and resources. Beyond the opportunities mentioned above, we especially hope you’ll consider applying for the following:
On behalf of the TOPSS Committee, we thank you for being a part of our great organization.

Warm Fuzzies from Dr. Gurel

The February 2016 Edition of the APA's Education Directorate's  "Psychology Teacher Network" has a pretty spectacular article written about high school psychology teachers by Dr. Lee Gurel.

If you're in need of a little love or a pick-me-up....or if you just want to feel seriously good about what you do in your classroom everyday, READ DR. GUREL'S THOUGHTS.

Here is a link to the February PTN article by Dr. Gurel, PhD

Oh, and here's a link to the Clark Workshop ...applications are being accepted through April 15, 2016. The is a FREE workshop for high school psych teachers held in MA each summer. Scholarships are available and it was one of the most amazing professional development experiences of my life. If you haven't yet applied or attended Clark, get on it!

Happy almost-spring to everyone! It is almost March, people!

APA/Clark University High School Psychology Teacher Workshop, part 1

Maria Vita and I get to work with a fantastic group of teachers here at Clark University!

The APA Clark University High School Psychology teacher workshop is becoming one of the "great traditions" in high school psychology. Way back in 2005, Dr. Lee Gurel decided to donate to the American Psychological Fund and establish a continuing endowment so that high school psychology teachers could gather during the summer to study at Clark. (you can find more context and background here)

Watch this space for updates on the 2015 Clark experience - a good time will be had by all, and some good psychology learnin' is about to commence!

Hello from Clark University!

Let me just say this: if I (Steve) had a bucket list, I would be one step closer to completing it - I got to meet Kristin Whitlock! And not only have I been able to meet her, but I have had the pleasure of presenting with her at the 7th annual APA/Clark University Workshop for high school psychology teachers. We have had an awesome two days and I'm sad that it's going to wrap-up on Wednesday. I will be posting more about the workshop later in the month, but let me just encourage you all to apply for next year's workshop. (And what's the best way to learn about this workshop and others for psych teachers? That's right - by joining TOPSS!)

What's so great about Clark? You get to hang out with 25 amazing fellow teachers, learn from each other, hear the latest research from terrific presenters and get treated royally by the terrific folks at APA and Clark University. This workshop is made possible by the generosity of Dr. Lee Gurel who should be deemed the parton saint of high school psychology teachers. I was really excited this week to learn that Lee subscribes to the THSP blog and reads it regularly!

And to my fellow moderators: now that I've met Kristin, I'm hoping to meet the rest of you this December at NCSS - right? We'll do our presentation on THSP and have a grand time in DC as well!

2011 APA/Clark University Workshop!

Seven years ago, the generous Dr. Lee Gurel made a generous donation to the APF (American Psychological Foundation) and Clark University to found the annual APA/Clark University workshop for high school psychology teachers (If you're interested in more information about Dr. Gurel and this gift to high school psychology teachers, check out the summary on the APA site). I got to work with the first group of Clark workshop psychology teachers and it is one of the best professional development experiences I've been involved in. The Clark campus is an incredible place for a high school psychology teacher: their archives are some of the best in the country - Freud visited Clark in 1909 and the university maintains maintains an impressive collection of artifacts from this trip and other significant artifacts important in the history of psychology (G. Stanley Hall's desk!). The Clark psychology faculty is committed to helping high school teachers understand current research trends.

The 2011 APA/Clark workshop will be a great experience. Our own Steve Jones (one of the co-authors of this blog - congrats Steve!) and Kristin Whitlock (one of the "rubric masters" at the AP Psychology Reading and psychology teacher-extraordinaire from Utah) will be presenting at the workshop. They will do a great job and you will receive a remarkable amount of activities/demonstrations/great ideas for your classroom. You can read about other details of the workshop (including a link to application materials and information about scholarships) on the APA site.

This year's conference will run from July 11-13 and the application deadline is April 15th. If you can go, you should try to go. You and your students will benefit for years from your professional learning experiences at Clark.

Highlights from Clark (or, Sortie to Worcester)

I had a delightful week with about 25 high school psychology teachers from all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico at the 2009 American Psychological Association (APA)/Clark University Workshop in sunny and pleasant Worcester, MA. The workshop was sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation, APA, and Clark University through the generosity of Dr. Lee Gurel.

Before getting into the highlights I want to urge all of you to go to a workshop for psychology teachers! This experience is invaluable for both your professional development and your self-efficacy. You'll learn an amazing amount from both the presenters and from your colleagues, and maybe best of all, you'll be treated like a professional. People at Clark were bending over backwards to make sure we had everything we needed -- now when was the last time you experienced that?

I was going to give you a rundown of every speaker and how much I enjoyed them all, but let me direct you back to the workshop schedule and you can see them for yourselves. (Perhaps if I have more energy/time this week I'll come back to these in more detail.) More impressive than just speaking was their willingness to cross that space that often separates college and high school folk and make real connections with us in the classroom, at meals and in the dorms. (I think one of my most eye-opening moments was listening to "Ben" Benjamin tick off the current batting averages of most of the starting lineup of the Washington Nationals off the top of his head -- and they're not even his favorite team!)

I will single out a few people, though. First is Dr. Lee Gurel, Clark '48, who helped to fund the workshop and was with us throughout. He talked about the power of teachers in his life and how he was doing his small part to pay that back. His energy and passion were amazing and I hope that we all can be as generous with those who follow us. The other was Dr. Nancy Budwig, who as Clark associate provost and psychology professor was our host. In addition to making sure everything ran smoothly from the food to the dorms to the presenters she and her staff always went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of. Nancy's sabbatical officially begins this week but it was impossible to tell that we were the only thing standing between her and a well-deserved break! Finally, the workshop would not have been possible without the efforts of Emily Leary and Martha Boenau of the APA -- thanks so much for all of your work!

Below are a few of the images from our conference. Some of them are quite random but they're the ones that turned out the best. They're all taken by me and psychology teachers are welcome to take them as use them as you wish. Each small image will link to a much bigger version so be sure to download the larger sizes if you want the photos.

If you attended the conference and would like to chime in with your thoughts, please do so below!
We were often reminded at the workshop that 2009 is the 100th anniversary of Freud's visit to America and specifically to Clark University, a fact that will be celebrated at a conference this October. In front of the landmark Jonas Clark hall you'll see this statue of Freud, complete with a stash of cigars in his pocket.

These first two photos were taken during that conference. The larger photo was taken on September 10 (according to Dr. Benjamin) since William James can be seen in the front row. The full list of the attendees on the right can be found at the bottom of this post about Solomon Carter Fuller, who was the first African-American psychiatrist, and who is pictured in the far right of the back row. Other attendees included James, Titchener, J.M. Cattell and Henry Goddard. In the famous picture of the six you see Freud on the left and Carl Jung on the right flanking G. Stanley Hall. The third photo shows the site at Clark today.
We learned a bit of conflicting trivia from Drs. Benjamin and Budwig -- while Dr. Benjamin told us that Freud and Jung stayed at Hall's house while at Clark, Dr. Budwig pointed out the hotel where the two stayed upon arrival. (Perhaps they first stayed at the hotel and then at Hall's? Please comment below if you know!) The first photo is of the hotel which also apparently was a brothel in the recent past. The second photo came from our visit to the Clark archives -- "Sigmund Freud's Sortie to America" was published in American Heritage in 1980 but sadly it is not available online. The third photo is of Worcester's Union Station, which is in the same location that the train station was in 1909 when Freud walked William James there as he left the conference (the same walk during which James suffered an angina attack). The final photo is of a photo of Clark University in 1909, featuring Jonas Clark Hall.
Clark's status as a significant school of psychology in 1909 was due to the efforts of Granville Stanley Hall, Clark's president and the first president of the APA. The photos above show the room where the APA was first founded, a plaque in the Clark library reflecting that, a photo of Hall and a glimpse into the G. Stanley Hall room, where you can see Dr. Benjamin talking to workshop participants.

I enjoyed seeing a number of the publications that were selected from the Clark archives.

Clark has a fascinating room with a photograph of every graduate of its PhD program. I captured a few of these, including Francis Cecil Sumner, Lewis Terman and Henry Goddard. It's amazing to see how things have changed over the years, particularly as the grads have becoming overwhelmingly female recently.
Finally, I'll end with a couple of photos of Dr. Gurel, proudly sporting his workshop t-shirt and giving us a few words of advice at the end. Thanks to Dr. Gurel and everyone who made this such an terrific time!
